SandPlay
“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.”
C. G. Jung
SandPlay is a non-verbal form of therapy which I frequently incorporate into my sessions. Both children and adults have seen the benefit of this technique in which miniatures are chosen and placed in the sand. This method was developed by Swiss therapist Dora Kalff, who was a colleague and friend of the famous psychologist Carl G. Jung. The idea behind SandPlay is that there are conflicts, ideas, and motivations in each persons' unconscious that cannot be accessed verbally. By choosing miniatures (small toys and other objects that are readily available near the sandbox), a scene is constructed in the free and protected space of the sand. There is no right or wrong way to create a tray, and many have found that working in the sand can help with trauma, anxiety, and depression.
As of February 2018, I am an officially approved and registered SandPlay Practitioner through the Sandplay Therapists of America. For more information, visit the official Sandplay website at www.sandplay.org.
